Webinar on demand. EMIR OTC Clearing: What’s next?

Hosted by DerivSource, a panel of industry experts from both the buy side and the sell side reviews the lessons learned from CAT 1 firms that are now live with EMIR OTC clearing and discusses the challenges ahead for CAT 2 and CAT 3 firms.

How are firms looking to improve operations to meet the new margin requirements for both cleared and uncleared derivatives? Learn more about new market developments and direct access solutions for the buy side to streamline the journey towards central clearing.

The webinar covers the following key topics:

  • What lessons have we learned from category 1 firms which are now live with EMIR OTC clearing?
  • How will the journey to OTC clearing be different for CAT 1, 2 and CAT 3 firms?
  • How are firms improving their capital efficiency to support OTC clearing?
  • Are direct access models the next big thing for the buy side?
  • How are firms changing their collateral management operations to meet the new margin requirements?

Panelists are:

  • Byron Baldwin, Deputy Global Head, Fixed Income and FX Derivatives Trading & Clearing Sales, Eurex & Eurex Clearing
  • Robert Burke, Managing Director and Head of Global OTC Clearing, BofA Merrill Lynch
  • Damian Imboden, Head Treasury, FX & Investment Risk, Swiss LIfe
  • Otto Vaisanen, Head of Global Securities Financing Sales – Continental Europe, Clearstream Banking

In the course of the webinar the audience was asked several questions on the impact EMIR OTC regulation has on their business.

Some 60 percent of the CAT 2/CAT 3 firms consider themselves ready ahead of the upcoming mandatory clearing deadlines, while the negotiating of legal documentation, managing the mixed trade flow and the adjusting of margin operations are amongst the biggest hurdles faced by those firms.

We were keen to understand whether central clearing will impact trading models and investment strategies. Almost 90 percent of the audience believe that clearing will have either some or even strong influence their models, confirming that clearing decisions are driving decision on trading and execution strategies, and not the other way round.

When it comes to pricing of clearing services we wanted to know how much this was influencing clearing decisions. Whereas 37 percent replied that it has a strong influence, half the audience considers pricing only as one of many factors, when it comes to picking a clearing provider.
